Language :  Langue française
Course contents :  CEFRL levels of the course:

  • Listening: B1
  • Reading: B2
  • Speaking: B1
  • Lecturing: B2
  • Writing: B1
The course is made up of a dozen Units, each of which contains the following:

  • Scientific texts
  • Grammatical revision and consolidation exercises
  • Various writing exercises (summaries, definitions ...)
Course objective :  The dual purpose of the course is (a) to consolidate and extend the student's general language understanding and use and (b) to introduce the specific features of scientific English (vocabulary and language structures). This is done in the five language skills, i.e. reading, listening, speaking, lecturing, and writing.
Prerequisites :  Basic knowledge of general English grammar and vocabulary (intermediate level).

Given the significant differences in proficiency between students in the first year of the Bachelor's Degree, the limited in-class teaching, and the number of students in each group, supervised self-learning and remedial work should be given due attention.
Organization :  The in-class course is taught to 25 to 35 students for two hours each week (45 hours in all).

Regular attendance and active participation are essential and taken into account in the final grade.
Written notes :  - Coursebook in two volumes: English Level One (Science) and Grammar available at "Point de Vue" (Presses Universitaires - Sart Tilman).

- Students can also buy the Grammaire de Base de l'Anglais (with exercises and key), ISLV, written in French. It is available at Intercopy.
Assessment :  Placement test in September.

Written exam in June (vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension multiple choice tests + writing exercises) and continuous assessment of progress through class participation, oral presentations and various written assignments.
