| Course contents : | Oral and written activities based on texts and audio and/or video recordings dealing with psychology. Students will be required to participate actively in class, which implies that they must have prepared some assignments before coming to class.

| Course objective : | - Communicating in English about themes connected to the fields of psychology.
- Activating listening and reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, detecting text coherence
- Developing the skills needed to make a good presentation and oral skills in general.
- Producing clear, detailed text (e.g. short essays or reports, letters and e-mails) on subjects related to psychology.
- Expanding the vocabulary related to the fields of psychology
- Revising and consolidating students' grammatical knowledge. |

| Prerequisites : | Good basic knowledge of English (equivalent to the B1-level of the CEFR)
Thorough knowledge of the vocabulary and linguistic principles seen in the first year course (LANG0040) |

| Organization : | Weekly 2-hour class in average-sized groups
Thorough preparation of the given assignments is key to students' progress. Here is an overview of the different tasks students will need to perform:
1° Self-study: revision of the basics of English grammar on the basis of the Remedial English Course. A few grammar tests will be organised to assess students' assimilation of the grammar rules.
2° For BAC2-students only: An oral presentation in which a topic from the self-study coursebook will be developed. The presentation will be based on a powerpoint slideshow.
3° The different modules from the course book include writing assignments. Students may be asked to hand in short essays / texts that may be marked.
4° Communicative teaching/learning entails interacting a lot. This means that students are expected to participate actively in in-class discussions. And this is only possible if students prepare classes by doing some homework. |

| Assessment : | 1° Attendance and active participation are extremely important and will be taken into account in the final mark. They will account for 20% of it, i.e. 4 marks out of 20:
- One mark will be awarded to students who attend at least 75% of all classes AND take part actively in the different activities. In other words, students who are just 'physically present' (presenteeism), but fail to get involved in the course will NOT get the mark.
- The oral presentation will count for two marks.
- Finally one mark will go to any other marked assignments.
1²° The breakdown of these four marks will be different for BAC1-students who attend the Level A course:
- One mark will go to attendance and active participation.
- Three marks will go to the grammar tests and any other marked assignments.
2° The oral exam will be about the contents and the language from the different modules seen in class as well as about one article the students will have selected from the reading file and prepared at home. The oral exam will count for 6 marks out of the final mark.
3° The listening test will assess students' ability to understand extended speech (e.g. lectures, TV news, current affairs programmes) and follow complex lines of argument. The theme of the recording used will be connected with the topics dealt with in class. The listening test will count for 2 marks out of the final mark.
4° The written exam will be based on all the chapters of the coursebook. It will assess students' reading and writing abilities as well as their knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary. Students will have to be able to write about all the topics dealt with in class. The written exam will count for 8 marks out of the final score. |
