| Language : | Langue française |
| Course contents : | 1) Grammatical analysis of sentences and texts ; 2) Re-writing texts including awkward turns of phrase or syntactical, stylistic and spelling mistakes ; 3) Lexical spelling ; 4) Grammatical spelling. |
| Course objective : | Students will be able to analyse a sentence from a text correctly and rigorously, favouring the perspective and the use of terminology of the "new grammar". They will be able to identify the uses of language that do not conform with those favoured in standard French, whether they are terms, turns of phrase or particular language registers. Students will be able to reformulate a clear and coherent text, in formal French, based on a text with omissions, awkward and clumsy turns of phrase, and all sorts of mistakes. |
| Prerequisites : | No particular prerequisites. |
| Organization : | Classes are taught by Mrs. Neven (subject taught mentioned in points 1 and 2) and by Mrs. Finné (subject taught mentioned in points 3 and 4). The class is divided into two groups. In the first quadrimester, group 1 follows the syllabus mentioned in points 1 and 2 while group 2 follows the syllabus mentioned in points 3 and 4. The lecturers swap over in the 2nd quadrimester.
TEACHING AND LEARNING METHODS: The course is based on exercises that are mostly in the syllabus and on the blog http://heltraduc.wordpress.com. All the exercises will be the subject of theoretical precisions explained in the reference grammar guide (1) and reformulated by the lecturer. The exercises carried out in class or at home will be corrected by the lecturer. Student participation during the theoretical class is essential, as well as regularly preparing the exercises at home. Therefore, students are required to study outside of class. Students can also test their knowledge or improve on their weaknesses by doing exercises online on the blog http://prolongements.wordpress.com. Based on the exercises carried out in class or at home, and on practical theoretical material, the teaching provided helps to promote student participation, interaction within the group and personal involvement. |
