Course contents :  
  • Basic concepts: standard language, standard Dutch, different standardisation processes.
  • Historic standardisation of the Dutch language from the 16th century.
  • New process of standardisation in the Netherlands and Flanders at the end of the 20th century.
Course objective :  1) Understanding of the different processes of standardisation of the Dutch language
2) Ability to use specialised literature in a critical manner, with a view to deepening the student's knowledge in the field.
Prerequisites :  Understanding of written and spoken Dutch.
If required, this course can be linked to other curriculum courses:
Preceded by: Introduction to the history of the Dutch language (2C).
Followed by: Evolutie van het Nederlands in de 20ste eeuw (Dutch linguistics).
Workshops :  Practical work. Critical reading of articles from scientific journals. Drafting of a report on critical reading.
Organization :  Timetable and session: 30 hours - 2nd quarter.
