Course contents :  History of the English language and major changes at each stage of its development, with esp. emphasis on OE and its legacy

Chapters on:

  • OE inflections; auxiliaries; negation; interrogation; preterite-presents; -ing form
  • Vocabulary; major layers; historical semantics; new words in OE
  • Major phonological changes
Course objective :  
  • To examine in detail the history of the English language in order to explain the English that is used today and to account for some "exceptions"
  • To lead students to a finer appreciation and command of English
Prerequisites :  My BAC2 Introduction à l'histoire de la langue anglaise
Workshops :  The handouts will include a mini-corpus of texts (esp. in OE, ME and Mod.E) used for exercises and to illustrate points raised in my lectures.
