- The different dictionaries;
- How to read and to use a dictionary?
- Homonymy and polysemy;
- Wordformation (esp. in Germanic languages)
- Brief historical survey of the discipline and of its problems and methods

- To introduce students to the basic concepts and terms
- To lead students to a better use of dictionaries
- To introduce students to the major problems and methods of linguistics
- With especial emphasis on Germanic languages
