Course contents :  Introduction to the external history of the Dutch language (ie history of Dutch in its social context), from the 8th century to the present day. In particular, the course explains the origins of the Dutch language, the Middle-Dutch period (1150-1550), the standardisation of Dutch in the Netherlands from the 17th century, the introduction of standard Dutch in Flanders from the 19th century and the expansion of the Dutch language in the world.
Prerequisites :  Understanding of written and spoken Dutch.
