Course contents :  Through the evolution of the social and cultural organization styles of the contemporary societies, new sociological stakes, new practices and social dynamics are outlined: the question of risk, the idea of precaution, security, danger; the idea of pluralism, multiculturalism, etc. The answer to these stakes constitutes a challenge for today's sociology. Starting with works of Ulrich Beck and Anthony Giddens, Peter Wagner, Arjun Appadurai, the course will try to clarify the social, cultural and institutional dynamics of this societal stake.
Course objective :  Starting by the idea of "modernity", the purpose of the course appears as an initiation to the sociological thought on socio-cultural, political stakes which cross the contemporary societies. One of the concerns of the course is to give to the students the abstract bases allowing them on one hand to apprehend these stakes with a critical mind and on the other hand to participate in the debates of the social sciences.
Organization :  Interactive teaching: preliminary theoretical Presentation alternating with a talk prepared by a group of 3 or 4 students and followed by a discussion. An active participation of the students is thus necessary.
Written notes :  Portfolio of readings prepared beforehand and given to students at the beginning of the second semester.
Compulsory reading of references on the subject. A bibliography will be given during the first lecture.
Assessment :  Oral examination
