Course contents :  Shakespeare's plays are still alive and kicking, as testified by the numerous performances, film versions and works they have inspired over the past few decades. This year's course bears on two plays (Hamlet and The Tempest) and on half a dozen contemporary rewritings.
Course objective :  Develop students' awareness of interactions between genres and periods, and sharpen their critical response to texts.
Prerequisites :  A good knowledge of English.
Workshops :  The course is taught in seminar form and relies on students' participation.
Organization :  The course is taught in the 1st term, possibly on Tuesday from 11 to 1.

Assessment :  Students are expected to hand in an essay of 2 to 3,000 words on a 20th C rewriting of another play by Shakespeare. An oral examination will take this assignment as its starting point.
