| Course contents : | This course is based on the study of the language and vocabulary specific to sociology as well as on academic skills such as essay writing and oral presentations. The course thus aims at giving students the tools necessary during their academic career and after.
Of course, this course will also give students the possibility to improve or perfect their knowledge of the English language and their listening and reading skills in the context of sociology. |
 |
| Course objective : | Firstly, this 90-hour course aims at the continued improvement of the four basic skills, namely listening, reading, speaking and writing, particularly in the context of the academic study of sociology.
Besides, it also aims at preparing students to write papers and reports and at giving them some practical training in giving efficient and attractive oral presentations. |
 |
| Prerequisites : | This is an upper-intermediate to advanced level course. It corresponds to ALTE level 4 or Council of Europe level C1. The level required to take this course is intermediate to upper-intermediate, ALTE level 3 or Council of Europe level B2, which corresponds to the level of the Level-2 English course ("Anglais 2"). |
 |
| Organization : | The class is taught for three hours every week over the two semesters.
During the first semester, students will attend one hour of listening and speaking exercises on top of the two hour class every week.
The second-semester class will be divided into three different seminars about how to give presentations and how to write reports and essays efficiently. These seminars will take up two of the three weekly hours. The third hour will be devoted to preparing the individual presentations that students will have to give as their final exam as well as the report that they will have to hand in at the same time.
Attendance is mandatory on days when compulsory assignments have been planned and when individual reports and presentations are discussed. |
 |
| Written notes : | The course books we will use will be available in September. Practicalities will be discussed in class.
Students will also have to read one of the following two novels for the oral exam in January:
O'Hagan, Andrew. Be Near Me.
Ali, Monica. Brick Lane.
Students who wish to do so can buy the books at a discount in class. |
 |
| Assessment : | 1. Continuous assessment: 1/20
- Students will have to write one essay sometime during the first semester. (2 pages - double spacing - 12 Times New Roman - MLA style)
2. Midterm examination in January (in three parts): 9/20
-
Oral exam about either one of the following two novels: O'Hagan, Andrew. Be Near Me. or Ali, Monica. Brick Lane. (4/20)
-
Written exam based on the topics and all the language material dealt with in class during the first semester. (4/20)
- Listening test (1/20)
3. Final exam: 10/20
The final exam will consist of an oral presentation and a report about a sociological issue chosen in collaboration with a member of ISHS. The presentation will be given in front of a jury made up of members of the ISHS department as well as of English teachers from ISLV. Half the marks will be given for content by the sociology teachers. The other half will be given by the English teachers for language, presentation and writing skills.
NB: The marks obtained for the essay written at home during the first semester count for both exam sessions in May and August. Should a student fail the midterm examination, however, he or she would have to take all three parts again in the second session. |
