Course contents :
Anglais

The course is composed of a general introduction and 9 workshops of 2 hours taught to groups of about 30 students.
Students are asked to prepare the vocabulary and texts each week (a unit per week on average). Such preparation work varies in time depending on students' previous knowledge.
Practice is completed with in-class study/revision of the main difficulties of written English (action modality, time relationships, determination and quantification, etc.) and systematic vocabulary development (useful verbal collocations, prefixes and suffixes, etc.).

Techniques d'apprentissage

This activity takes part of the cursus in order to train students to have a good approach in the other teachings.

Course objective :
Anglais

The course mainly aims at developing the global and selective reading comprehension of scientific documents (as well as listening comprehension to a lesser extent). It starts from simple reviews for the general public and gradually progresses to genuine articles from renowned medical journals (e.g. British Medical Journal).
Acquired skills should allow students to access specific scientific literature easily and efficiently.

Techniques d'apprentissage

The aim is to develop the student's autonomy by a thinking about the study management tools looking forward to preparing the exams.

Prerequisites :
Anglais

Considering its objectives, the course cannot be seen as an introduction to the basics of the English language. As a result, students should already have a basic grounding in English grammar and vocabulary (e.g. through secondary education/evening classes). In other words, all medical students should know that they need to have become familiar with English during prior general education.
Organization :
Anglais

The in-class course is taught to 30-student groups in January and February (rooms S24, S26, S28 and S30 in B5b).

A placement test is held on 1st October 2007 to assess the level of knowledge of all students and give the weakest students the opportunity to follow an additional (PREMED) course from October to December.

The placement test is not compulsory but the students who will not have taken it won't be included in revision classes.

Techniques d'apprentissage

Two activities (during 2 hours) are proposed, one in the first period, the other in the second period of the academic year.

These activities are compulsory. Presence and preparations could be checked.

The first session refers to the production of learning tools (notes, summaries, syntheses...). The second one refers to preparation for exams.

Written notes :
Anglais

The MedEng 1 and Premed course books will be available from the AREM as of September. All students are required to buy both course books, which together represent the English course for the 1st year of the Bachelor's Degree in Medicine and Dentistry.

Techniques d'apprentissage

Students will receive a written document at the end of each activity.

Assessment :
Anglais

Written exam.
Students will be asked to answer multiple-choice and T/F questions on the medical vocabulary listed in the MedEng1 course book as well as on a sight text dealing with a medical subject.

The grade for English is part of the global grade for the Module "Apprentissage à l'approche transdisciplinaire des problèmes biomédicaux".

Remarks :
Anglais

1. Considering the significant differences between 1st-year students, the limited teaching time and the number of students in each group, supervised self-learning and remedial work should be given due attention. Students are encouraged to prepare vocabulary and texts each week.

2. To do revision exercises on line, students can log on to the ISLV website http://www.ulg.ac.be/islvle. Then they can simply click on TRAVAUX PRATIQUES and on ANGLAIS.

3. Grammar reference works will be presented in the coursebook.
