Course and exercises

This course represents the first part of the specific physical education teachers education. Build on research data in sport pedagogy, practical examples and teachers' evidences, it provides useful information to students which will help them to become more effective.

Several chapters are proposed:

  • The place of physical education in secondary school.
  • Objectives of physical education.
  • PE teacher's competencies.
  • Organisation of PE in secondary school.
  • Intervention in PE (teacher's decisions; competencies' assessment;...)

Observation practice

Observation practice are organised in order to provide the best possible opportunities to acquire a large experience.

Teaching practice

Students teach to a secondary school level class and are supervised by a master teacher.

Reflexive practice

Students analyse their teaching practice in order to identify process aiming to improve their level.

Course objective :  
Course and exercises

Objectives are:

  • To allow students to become aware about the place of PE in secondary school.
  • To provide information about PE teachers' responsabilities.
  • To illustrate pedagogical principles to apply in secondary school.
  • To provide a practical experience to the students.
  • To develop a reflexive and positive attitude toward teaching.

Observation practice

To provide opportunities to discover the school context.

Teaching practice

To prepare students to work with a class in an autonomous way.

Reflexive practice

To help students to analyse their own practice and to look for solutions to potential problems that could encountered in their teaching experience.

Prerequisites :  
Course and exercises

All specific courses proposed during the initial graduation in Physical education/Sport sciences.

Observation practice

All teaching experiences that students have during their specific physical education/Sport sciences courses.

Teaching practice

To attend to the other activities of this coourse.

Reflexive practice

No pre-requisites.

Workshops :  
Course and exercises

Sessions are planned in order to have a theoretical lesson together with a practical seminar or exercise. In that way, students can better understand how to apply the theory. Moreover, practical exercises are organised in a natural context with the collaboration of a secondary level school.

Observation practice

Students attend to lessons delivered by their future master teacher. They have to collect data about the teaching context and write a report underlining the main observation that will influence their decisions.

Course and exercises

Activities are organised on Wednesday. They begin with a theoretical session while seminars, exercises and practical teaching are planned during the remaining part of the day.

The planning of the lessons is provided to students during the first meeting.

Observation practice

It is described during the first meeting. Students receive the master teachers list and have to contact them. Modalities of the organisation are described also.

Teaching practice

Information about teaching practice are provided during the first lesson of the theoretical course.

Reflexive practice

Information about teaching practice are provided during the first lesson of the theoretical course.

Course and exercises

A copy of the slides proposed during the theoretical lessons is provided to the students' representative. The same applies with some other documents exploited at the time of the sessions. In addition, the students will have to seek other information, according to recommendations' of the course's leader or his assistants.

Observation practice

There is no written support for this part of the preparation.

Assessment :  
Course and exercises

The assessment of this part is combined to the assessment of the second part.

Theory is assessed through a written exam (open questions where students have to explain how they would apply theory in specific situations). An oral exam is organised. It is compulsory for students who did not achieve at the written part. Others are free to present or not.

Assessment of the practical part is focused on involvement in seminars and execises, quality of the written works done during the semestre and quality of teaching experiences.

Information about assessment is provided during the first meeting.

Observation practice

Wriiten reports are assessed by the staff members according to criteria that are provided to students at the beginning of the academic year.

Teaching practice

Assessement lays on activities of the whole unit. An assessment grid is provided to the students to help them to prepare them.

Reflexive practice

Assessment is based on the student's involvement (quality of the reports).
