| Aperçu général : | Knowing Not to Know: Emily Dickinson and Henry James
Charlotte Nekola (Fulbright professor)
This seminar combines study of two major American authors not usually examined side by side. Italo Calvino paired these two to demonstrate his concept of "lightness" - a sort of refusal of the need to know, to decide. Few other writers in American literature resist interpretation as vigorously as Dickinson and James; they share a core of ambivalence about the written word, and about the relativity of moral values. We will work to reveal this core of ambivalence in their work, and the tension their obvious enchantment with language radiates at the same time. |
