Course contents : This course continues the development of reading, data gathering, and note-taking using texts or sets of texts (as started in the English Level One course). It also focuses on research, analysis and synthesis, and report-writing capacities as well as oral understanding and presentation skills.
Course objective : The purpose of this course is threefold:

  • allow students to analyze and synthesize English scientific literature,
  • allow students to follow oral presentations in English, take accurate notes, and synthesize them,
  • allow students to present scientific information in correct and consistent English.
Prerequisites : English Level Two (taught in second year of the Bachelor's Degree in Sciences).
Organization : The in-class course is taught to 25 to 35 students for two hours each week (45 hours in all).
Together, preparation, active participation, oral presentations and written assignments during the year account for 40 to 50% of the final grade.
Written notes : Academic Writing Module (2006-2007) course notes compulsory. Internet access recommended.
Assessment : Written exam in June, oral exam in June (on personal readings) and continuous assessment of progress through class participation, oral presentations and various written assignments.
