Course objective : Understanding of management information system, database, data bank and how to use them in order to find the required information.
This lecture has also a technical aspect.
Prerequisites : Fundamentals of computer science and computer literacy
Ability of use Windows, Internet Explorer (or equivalent browser).
Effective use of at least one programming language (C, Pascal, javascript, ...)
Ability to use MS-Access will be benefitial.
Workshops : The practical exercices are done in two ways:
  • during the lecture in order to immediately practice the learned notions
  • in a group exercice: high volume of work but not scheduled. Could also be done outside of the University
Organization : Theory course with reference to real-life cases
Practical exercises during the course : creation, modification and queries in SQL ; creation of a dynamic website with links to a database
Written notes : No paper document is available since the content is in permanent flux in order to 'stick' to current state of the art.

Assessment : 1st session assessment = practical group assignment, marked; written examination on exercises (SQL and HTML); oral examination on the theory
2nd session assessment : idem (the practical assignement does not need to be done if already completed)
