Introduction to Computer Networks

Duration :30h Th, 15h Pr
Credits/ECTS :
2me année du grade de master en sciences géographiques, orientation géomatique et géométrologie, à finalité spécialisée (géomètre)5
Holder(s) :Guy Leduc
Course contents :
  • Layered architectures: OSI et TCP/IP models.
  • Physical layer: theoretical basis, transmission media, telephone network, modem.
  • Data link layer: error detection and correction, sliding window protocols.
  • Medium access control sublayer: Aloha, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, transparent bridges, switches, virtual LANs (VLAN).
  • Network layer: virtual circuits and datagramme networks, distance vector and link-state routing, hierarchical routing, network interconnection, address mapping, tunneling, fragmentation, IP, ARP, OSPF, BGP.
  • Transport layer: connection-mode service, addressing, connection establishment and release, flow and congestion control, TCP, UDP.
Course objective : At the end of the course students will understand well the principles of computer networks, their layered architectures (OSI model), the fundamental mechanisms governing the protocols in various layers, and some examples of existing networks.
Prerequisites : Basic knowledge of computer architectures and operating systems.
Workshops : Problem solutions lessons, same schedule as main lessons.
Organization : Second term (from February to May), Fridays from 9AM to 1PM
Written notes : Reference book: Andrew S. Tanenbaum. Computer Networks (Fourth Edition). Prentice-Hall, 2003 (ISBN 0-13-038488-7)
Assessment : The evaluation is threefold: the project, a written exam on exercises, and an oral exam on the theory. At the oral exam the student has to expose clearly and in a synthetical way one part of the course, and prove his/her in-depth understanding by answering questions.
