| Course contents : | The curse of obstetrics includes some basics recalls concerning physiological process of parturition. He describes the differents stages of parturition, main rules of obstetrical examination (goals and methods), presents the pharmacological control and blood and non bloody interventions methods. Finally, it presents the main obstetrical complications. The curse related to mammary pathologies describes the consequences of mastitis, définition and symptoms, aetiology, pathogeny, diagnostic and treatment. The curse devoted to the biotechnologies of reproduction presents artificial insemination (sperm preservation methods, AI technics), in vivo and in vitro embryo production methods (superovulation, embryo recovery, quality determination, embryo preservation and transfert, ovum pick up, oocytes quality evaluation, maturation, in vitro fecundation process, embryo culture). | |||||

| Course objective : | Obstetric is a science and a art. A science who needs anatomical, physiological and pathological knowledges. At the end of this curse, the student will be able to have a right attitude during the parturition and to decide the correct manual, surgical or pharmacological intervention to do. At the end of the curse related to the pathologies of the mamamry gland, the student will be able to identify an individual or a herd problem of mastitis, to understand the relative importance and interrelationships between the main causative factors (germ, animal, environment) and finally to put in place a preventive or curative treatment. The biotechnologies of reproduction concern artificial nsemination, in vitro or in vivo embryo production, cloning and transgenesis. At the end of the curse, the student will be more confident with these techniques in default to have a good practical experience. | |||||

| Prerequisites : | The teachings assume a good synthetic knowledge of physiology of reproduction, general and topographic anatomy of the mammary and genital tract of the concern species | |||||

| Workshops : | During the academic year 2005-2006, the department organizes during two weeks of individual cases and farms visits. At the end of the farms visit week, the student will be able to identify in an individual anamnesis the zootechnical pathological symptomatical, diagnostical andn therapeutical data, to understand their chronological and physiopathological relationships et to evaluate fertility and fecundity of a herd. He will participate to a controlled exercice (12,5h) and clinical reasoning learning (2,5 h). The week devoted to individual cases is organized in collaboration with the department of internal medicine. During this week, the student will be confronted with the main pathologies in bovine and equine reproduction. | |||||

| Organization : | L'ensemble des trois thèmes sera dispensé selon l'horaire renseigné aux étudiants en début d'année. La présence au cours quoique non légalement obligatoire est vivement recommandée. | |||||

| Written notes : | Ce cours fait l'objet de notes (présentations Word et Power point accompagnées de nombreuses illustrations et schémas) annuellement remises à jour et disponibles en version papier ou sur CD-ROM. Il est vivement conseillé aux étudiants de s'en procurer la dernière version auprès de l'Office des Cours de la Faculté de Médecine Vétérinaire. Ces notes sont également téléchargeables à partir du site du service http://www.fmv.ulg.ac.be/oga/ou consultables à partir des ordinateurs mis à la disposition des étudiants dans le service d'OGA. Des cassettes vidéo et des CD-ROM sont également à la disposition des étudiants dans le service. Ils sont consultables sur place. | Assessment : | Des tests formatifs on line (type QCM avec SGI et feedbacks) concernant les matières enseignées sont mis à la disposition des étudiants. Ceux-ci sont vivement invités à les consulter à partir du site WEB du service d'OGA : http://www.fmv.ulg.ac.be/oga/agenda/evaluation/qcm.html. Depuis plusieurs années déjà, conscient de l'importance d'une évaluation de la métacognition (connaissance que l'étudiant a de ses connaissances) des étudiant(e)s, le service recourt aux degrés de certitude pour les tests certificatifs qu'il organise. Le nombre et modalités pratiques des tests formatifs et certificatifs organisés pendant l'année sont communiqués aux étudiants au début de l'année académique. | Remarks : | Ces propositions sont minimalistes étant donné les moyens humains et matériels disponibles insuffisants par rapport à la situation de pléthore de la faculté. Ainsi, ne nous est-il plus possible d'organiser des travaux pratiques d'insémination artificielle. De même, les étudiants n'ont-ils plus l'occasion de s'exercer suffisamment aux gestes et activités propédeutiques de base tels que la palpation manuelle du tractus génital, la manipulation d'une sonde échographique, le prélèvement et l'examen de sperme, l'examen obstétrical, l'insémination artificielle, l'analyse de données... | |||||
