STAT1201-1

Multivariate Analysis and Statistical Software Use

Duration :30h Th
Credits/ECTS :
3rd "licence" in Psychology3
Holder(s) :Francis Pérée
Course contents : This course deals with problems that are encountered by researchers in psychology, pedagogy and speech therapy. Through the students' use of the SAS and STATISTICA softwares, the course studies the most frequent multivariate statistical procedures that are in use in social sciences.
A theoretical account synthesizes the various statistical concepts taken into consideration in each chapter. The latter are then illustrated by concrete applications which are solved with the help of the two sorts of software mentioned above.
The studied topics are as follows : Matrix Algebra - Introduction to the SAS software - Stepwise Regression- Analysis of Multivariate Variance - Factor Analysis - Canonical Analysis - Discriminant Analysis - Cluster Analysis- Correspondence Analysis - Multidimensional Scaling.
Course objective : Primarily, the course intends to help the students to acquire the knowledge of a certain number of multivariate statistical procedures, to solve concrete problems whose solutions imply to resort to them and, in this context, to understand the use of statistical software.
Thus the students must acquire and/or develop their knowledge in multivariate statistics and handle the use of the SAS and STATISTICA softwares.
Prerequisites : To have followed and passed the preceding STAT1OO2-1 course "Problems of Statistics and Software Use" (or equivalent) and to be able to use at least a statistical software (preferably STATISTICA).
Workshops : 3O hours of practice are proposed to the students. Exercises are also proposed within the framework of the course and must be solved on a computer.
The data files related to theses exercises are at the disposal of the students on the Web site of Liege University (http://my.ulg.be)
Organization : All the classes take place in the computer room (CAFEIM), which enables each student to work on a computer individually and to solve concrete applications.
Written notes : PEREE F.P., Analyse multivariée et utilisation de logiciels statistiques, Editions de l'Université de Liège, 2005.
Assessment : The evaluation test last three hours. Each student must solve, by himself and on a computer, several problems in connection with multivariate analysis.
The students may have the course book and their personal notes at their disposal.
The answers to the questions of the examination must be written down on the personalized questionnaire that each student received at the beginning of the examination.
