| Course contents :
| The course is devided in two parts. The first part is devoted to an introduction to probabilities. The theory is restricted to the topics which are essential for a clear comprehension of statistical inference: definition, axioms and properties of the probability, conditional probablity, independance, random variables, distributions, expectation and conditional expectation, correlation and regression, asymptotic theorems. The second part deals with essential concept and methods in statistics. Descriptive statistics, sampling theory, estimation, hypothesis testing theory, parametric and non parametric most usual tests. Introduction to the use of a statistical software (Statistica). | |
| | | |
| Course objective :
| Having a clear understanding of the notion of probability. Learning to extract information from data using statistical methods. Be accustomed to the notion of model. Analysing data through the fitting and comparison of models. | |
| | | |
| Prerequisites :
| Basic knowledge on mathematical analysis and algebra. | |
| | | |
| Workshops :
| Exercices in probability theory. Data analysis using statistical methods. | |
| | | |
| Organization :
| Partim probability: examples are given and short exercices are solved during the course. Practical works are organised and devoted to more developped applications and exercices. Partim statistics: an introduction to the use of a statistical software (Statistica)is given throuhout the course. Practical works are devoted to treatment and analysis of real data. | |
| | | |
| Written notes :
| Handout by the instructor Compulsory reading - Initiation aux probabilités. Sh.M.Ross. Presses Polytechniques Romandes. - Statistics, a guide to the use of statistical methods in the physical sciences. R.J.Barlow. J.Wiley & Sons. | |
| | | |
| Assessment :
| Examination involves 1. Written test on probability theory (theory and exercices) 2. Written test on statistical analysis: exercices and treatment of real data. 3. Oral examination about statistical analysis: theory and methods. Quality of the homeworks is also appreciated. | |
