Descriptive statistics

Course contents : Real life applications are used to introduce the basic tools of descriptive statistics. The follwing themes are especially covered: types of statistical variables, data management (frequency distributions, histograms, boxplots,...), location and scale parameters, bivariate data analysis (linear regression and correlation analysis),...
Course objective : There are different aims. First of all, it is shown how to summarize and present data in a efficient way. Then, the courses try to develop the way of thinking in statistics as well as the ability to analyse in a critical way the abundance of statistical information given in the news. Finally, some practical lessons are devoted to the use of the statistical functions of the package Excel.
Prerequisites : None
Workshops : 15 hours of practicals are scheduled: 10 hours of tutorials (given by a assistant) and 5 hours of practicals in a computer room.
Organization : The course is given by the professor and the tutorials and practicals by assistants during the second semester according to the timetables of the HEC-Management school.
Written notes : The notes are distributed via the students associations.
Assessment : The final mark is a weighted mean from the two following marks:

- written exam (theory and exercises) in May/June (for 75% of the global score).



- practical and oral examen on a computer in May/June (for 25% of the global score)
