Sleep and Cognition

Duration :30h Th
Credits/ECTS :
Holder(s) :Philippe Peigneux
Course contents : We all spent more or less 25 years in the sleeping state. This factual information stresses the importance of sleeping, an activity found in all human and animal species. This course aims to provide students with a global and critical reading of the relationships between sleep, biological rhythms and cognitive functioning, with an accent on learning and memory consolidation processes.
Course objective : This course aims to demonstrate that sleep is not a simple passive state, but actually constitutes a rich and complex activity from neurophysiological and cognitive perspectives. We will specifically concentrate on a role for sleep in brain plasticity and memory consolidation processes, but also on the influence of biological rhythms on cognition and the underlying cerebral activity.
Organization : 30 hours, 2 hours per week

Part of the courses will be held in seminar form with an article presentation by each participant
Written notes : Scientific papers and presentation slides will be made available
Assessment : Evaluation will be made based on the seminar presentation and on an oral examination. Half of the oral examination will focus on the critical presentation of a scientific paper related to the domain.
