PHYS0926-1

Laboratory of fundamental sciences

Duration :45h Th
Credits/ECTS :
3e ingénieur commercial4
Holder(s) :Christine Bertrand, Pierre Deneye, Aude Niffle    , Thierry Pironet
Course contents : Three main subjects will be covered during these sessions : mineral and organic chemistry, biology
and physics

In chemistry, the following subjects will be covered
Titrations ( conductometric, acid-base)
Acid / Bases
Oxydo-reduction reactions
Polymers
Chemistry, light and colors
Separation techniques

In biology, the following subjects will be covered
Milk analysis
C-Vitamin proportionning

In physics, the following subjects will be covered
General electricity ( direct / alternating current, electromagnetism, electrochemistry )
Periodical motions
Fluids
Thermodynamic
Course objective : These laboratories allow to illustrate as well as to understand the theoretical notions learned during the physics and chemistry courses. The second objective is to discover analysis techniques used in industry.
Prerequisites : SC 814 Physics 1
SC 840 Physics 2
SC 819 Physics 3
SC 821 Chemistry
Organization : In some cases, a theoretical reminder will be given in the beginning of the laboratory. The students will next work by groups of 4-5 people to realise the experiment according to a written operating mode or to oral instructions.
For other sessions, a deductive methodology will be used; the students will work directly after a short implementation. Theoretical conclusions will then be established in function of the experiment's results.

Support notes will be available for the three main subjects.
Assessment : 1st session assessment : The students will be assessed continuously through the year via short interrogations at the biginning or the end of the sessions. On the other hand, a report must be handed in after each laboratory. A balanced average of these two notes will constitute the grade. Participation, assiduity, as well as questions / answers relevance and the individual work will also be assessed and will be part of the global grade.
2nd session assessment : oral exam which will include an experiment and / or a report on one of the laboratory
Prolonged 2nd session assessment : same as 2nd session assessment
