| Course contents :
| Shakespeare's plays are still alive and kicking, as can be seen from the numerous performances, film versions and works they have inspired. This year's course bears on three plays and three "derived works": Love's Labours Lost, with Kenneth Branagh's film; Hamlet, with John Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenberg are Dead, and The Tempest, with Marina Warner's novel Indigo. | |

| Course objective :
| Develop students' awareness of interactions between genres and periods, and sharpen their critical response to texts. | |

| Prerequisites :
| A good knowledge of English. | |

| Organization :
| The course is taught in the 2nd term, on Tuesday from 11 to 1. | |

| Written notes :
| Recommended editions : Arden for Love's Labours Lost and The Tempest, and St Martin's Press-Macmillan for Hamlet. (I still have a few copies of Hamlet in this edition in my office.) | |

| Assessment :
| Students are expected to hand in an essay of 2 to 3,000 words. An oral examination will take this assignment as its starting point. | |
