Post-colonial literatures in English: In-depth Approach

Course contents : The course begins with an introduction to the historical and sociological background to Caribbean literature. After a brief overview of Caribbean literature (seen as a regional, national and diasporic tradition)and its major figures, the rest of the course is devoted to the discussion of selected poems, short stories and novels, most of them written by contemporary writers. A new theme is chosen every year. The topic for 2005-2006 is "The African Presence in Caribbean Literature".
Course objective : Introduction to anglophone Caribbean Literature
Prerequisites : Good knowledge of English.
Organization : First term, 2 hours a week
Written notes : Poems and short stories available later.

Paule Marshall, Praisesong for the Widow (Virago)
Assessment : Written essay and oral examination.
