Course contents : 1. Studying meaning problems in selecded words and constructions of contemporary German.
2. Introduction to contemporary German linguistics (semantics and pragmatics).
3. Practicing basic grammar and vocabulary.

Prerequisites : The first and second year courses on German in the Department of German or Germanic Languages and Literatures of a University.
Workshops : 1. Obligatory:
a. Making exercises and reading linguistic texts (about 100 pages) to prepare discussion in class.
b. Translating texts at home (generally one text every fortnight).
2. Optional: Conversation exercises.

The students are supposed to have:
- Schwarz, Chur: Semantik. Gunter Narr (Taschenbuch).
- Grewendorf, Hamm, Sternefeld: Sprachliches Wissen. Suhrkamp (Taschenbuch).
- Langenscheidts Großwôrterbuch Deutsch als Fremdsprache.
- A German Grammar.
- Langenscheidt: basic vocabulary of German.
Sheets will also be handed out.
Assessment : Written examination.
Oral examination: theory, basic grammar and vocabulary, pronunciation.
