| Course contents :
| The courses consists of three parts :
- Lecture : the course combines a revision of selected areas of the grammar covered in the first year with the study of a more complex grammar book written in English.The course is also devoted to the critical discussion of authentic languageexamples taken from various corpora, as well as examples selected by the students themselves.
- Reading and discussion of non-literary texts (press articles), some of which deal with linguitic issues.
- Practicals : oral and written. This course implies, as for level I, regular self-study and daily practice of the language.

| Course objective :
| Even if the major aims of this course are basically similar to those defined for level I, level II implies a more advanced command of the language, especially in its written form. Practically, this means : - a more extensive vocabulary ; - thorough knowlegde of grammar ; - a more autonomous practice of oral and written English, with special focus on language registers. At the end of the course, students should be able to express themselves fluently (both orally and in writing) in order to participate in the more complex courses taught in the third and fourth years. | |

| Assessment :
| Two written tests are organized during the year. Their results, togetherwith personalized comments, enable students to assess their strengths and weaknesses. During the year, the students also have to write two essays which will be marked and discussed. The final exam is both written and oral. For the written exam, students must be able to : (a) make a correct translation into English of simple sentences coveringthe grammar areas studied in class ; (b) write a short essay on a topic discussed in class ;
For the oral exam, they must be able to : (a) understand an "oral" text (listening comprehension).
(b) speak fluently and correctly on the themes covered in a file of texts (s)he has put together (to be handed in in April too). | |
