Course contents :
  • Further study of everyday English vocabulary and introduction to business English vocabulary.
  • Review and further study of grammar basics.
  • Developing reading and listening comprehension skills.
  • Communication practice in everyday and business English.
  • Writing exercises (Ingénieurs 2 langues).
  • Self-study on website.
Course objective : Developing and strengthening the four skills (listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing) in everyday and business English.
Prerequisites : This course is not a beginners'course. Students should have a good basic knowledge of English (Secondary/High school level or ALTE Level 1 or Council of Europe level A2).
Organization : I. Students studying 2 languages (ISLV):

The in-class course is taught to about 25 students for two hours every week, three hours in the second semester. Students are required to prepare the units from the coursebook every week (about one unit every three weeks). This preparation work varies in time depending on the students' previous knowledge. There will be some tutorial hours to help the students prepare their business simulation.


II. Students studying 3 languages (ex-HEC):

2 hours a week during the first semester and 1 hour + 1 hour exercises (grammar, communication and listening comprehension) during the second semester. Possibility of conversation club and tutorial.

Compulsory:

  • "Market Leader", Longman. This coursebook will be sold for €30 instead of €36.45 in the hall in front of the "grands amphis" (Bât B7a) in Sart Tilman from 12:30 to 1:30 on Monday, September 26th.
  • "Grammaire anglaise de base" (with exercises and key) (ISLV): available at Intercopy.
  • Grammar and vocabulary exercises and grammar tests: available at Intercopy mid-October.
  • Readings file for the oral exam: available at Intercopy in December.
  • Listening comprehension exercises for the language lab: available at Intercopy in December.

Assessment : I. Students studying 2 languages (ISLV):

1. Continuous assessment (2/20):

  • Assessment test at the beginning of the year.
  • Mock exam on December 17th.
  • 2 writing exercises (1/20).
  • 2 listening comprehension exercises (1/20).
  • 5 grammar tests.
2. Written exam (8/20):

  • Reading comprehension exercises based on an unseen text.
  • Vocabulary exercises.
  • Grammar exercises.
  • Writing exercise.
3. Oral exam (7/20):

  • Business simulation in groups of 4 students based on one of the units from the coursebook (3/20).
  • 15-minute discussion based on a few texts from the coursebook and 10 pages of texts from the British and American press chosen in the readings file (4/20).
4. Listening comprehension exam (3/20).



II. Students studying 3 languages (ex-HEC):

  • Written exam in January (25%): vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening comprehension, written expression.
  • Written exam in June (50%): vocabulary, grammar, reading and listening comprehension, written expression.
  • Oral exam during the 2nd semester (25%): Business simulation (group simulation of a conversation in business English).
  • Re-sit: written and oral exam.
