Holder(s) :ISLV
Course contents : This makes up the first part of the course for Information and Communication students (continued in the second year).

The syllabus, consisting of four chapters, as well as the various learning activities in class, aim at reactivating the knowledge students have acquired in high school and at preparing them to use the English language in an active way.

The course consists mostly in the analysis of various texts and articles as well as in discussions based on these readings.

Students are expected to learn the grammar by themselves and their learning will be tested in the course of the semester through a number of quizzes corrected in class. These quizzes will allow students to check their good understanding of the grammar and to ask for additional explanations when needed.
Course objective : - Revision and enrichment of the basic English vocabulary as well as of its appropriate use.

- Reading comprehension: understanding texts, summarizing the information, reacting to the content.

- Revision and extension of essential grammar principles and rules.
Prerequisites : Basic knowledge of the English vocabulary and grammar (high school level).
Organization : The course takes place every week and lasts two hours.

On top of this two-hour class, students are expected to work another 2 to 4 hours on their own (preparation of texts and exercises, study of the grammar, revision of the vocabulary learned in class). This individual work is an essential element in the student's progression through the course.

Moreover, students will be invited to attend the projection of a film scheduled out of the actual class. This film will be the center of one of the courses and the object of discussions in class.

- a written exam based on the texts seen in class, the grammar and a new text.

These latter two examinations will take place in the May-June exam session
