Course contents : In-class course (60 hours)

This course consists of 8 theme-based units (making a presentation, business organisation, telephoning, socialising, meetings and marketing, negotiating and doing business across cultures, money and jobs) as well as additional grammar and vocabulary exercises. It includes the following:

  • Speaking and communication activities in business English: discussions, dialogues, role-plays, oral presentations, press reviews, etc.
  • Reading comprehension of texts from the Internet or the British and American press dealing with economic- and business-related topics.
  • Listening comprehension.
  • Quick revision of some grammar points and improvement of the students' command of the language.
  • Further study of business vocabulary.
  • Writing tasks: business letters, graph descriptions, etc.
Course objective : Improving the four skills, namely listening and reading comprehension, speaking and writing, in professional situations of the world of business and economics.
Prerequisites : This is an upper-intermediate to advanced level business course. It corresponds to ALTE level 4 or Council of Europe level C1. The level required to take this course is intermediate to upper-intermediate, ALTE level 3 or Council of Europe level B2, which corresponds to the level of the Level-2 English course ("Anglais 2").
Organization : The in-class course is taught to about 25 students for two hours every week. Students are required to prepare the exercises, vocabulary and texts from the coursebook every week. This preparation work varies in time depending on the students' previous knowledge. Regular work is essential as students are expected to participate actively in class discussions and debates.

  • "Terror Inc" (2004) by L.Napoleoni OR "The End of Poverty" (2004) by J.Sachs, Penguin books: students should choose and order their book on the first day of class.

  • "Longman Dictionary of Business English".
Assessment : 1. Continuous assessment (3 or 4/20):

  • Progress test on December 17th.
  • 2 writing exercises in class: e.g. business letter (1/20).
  • 2 listening comprehension exercises in class (3/20 for the 90-hour course, 2/20 for the 60-hour course).
  • 5 grammar tests.
2. Written exam (8/20 for the 90-hour course, 9/20 for the 60-hour course):

  • Reading comprehension exercises based on an unseen text.
  • Vocabulary exercises.
  • Grammar exercises.
  • Writing exercise.
3. Oral exam (8/20):

  • Oral presentation in class based on one of the information files in groups of 4 students (4/20).
  • 15-minute discussion about the book chosen for the oral exam (4/20).
