Strategic Monitoring and Control

Course contents : This course presents a large overview of the main stakes linked to strategic management in companies and organizations and proposes an in-depth presentation of the different managerial tools and techniques used to implement efficiently strategic management in companies confrontated with fast-evolving environment, uncertainty and fierce competition.
A particular attention is awarded to the illustration of theoretical concepts by both numerous case studies and by the presentation of the fundamental scientific papers linked to each theoretical chapter.
This course successively presents the following themes : what is strategy and why is it important in any organization ?, the managerial process of crafting and executing strategy, how to analyze a company's external environment ?, how to analyze a company's resources and competitive position ?, the five generic competitive strategies and their subsequent choices and consequences, how to compete in foreign markets ?, how to tailor a strategy fitting specific industry and company situations ?, strategies of diversification and at least, the strong and necessary links between strategy, ethics and social responsibility.

Prerequisites : Introduction to organization theory OR Principles of Management.
Workshops : At the start of the course, students are grouped by subgroups of 2 or 3 members.

Each session begins with a theoretical presentation realized by a group of students (45 min.), and followed by a brief synthesis (5 min. max.) of its key elements presented by the Professor.

Then, two predetermined groups present successively a summary of a scientific paper linked to the theme of each chapter (20 min.) and an extended case study (max. 45 min.).
Organization : 45 hours, 1st quadrimester.

Assessment : Presentation of a theoretical chapter during a session : 15 %

Presentation of a scientific paper : 25 %

Final oral exam - private presentation of a teaching note (3 pages max.) about a subject dealt during the course and chosen by the student : 25 %

The other compulsory works may be presented either in French or in English.
