| Course contents :
| The course will take place during the second semester, on Thursdays, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The first class will take place on Thursday 7 February 2006.
The course is structured in two parts:
The first part comprises some 20 hours of theoretical lectures. These lectures will allow to describe the sector of the social economy in Belgium, to understand its raison d'être and to deduce its specificity in terms of management (in particular for marketing, funding modes and management of human resources).
The second part has a more active character. Students will be invited to take part in a thematic workshop. Various subjects are proposed (the subjects chosen will be confirmed during the first class, depending on the interests of the students): fair trade, work-integration social economy, ethical finance, waste recycling, cultural activities, health mutual societies etc. The students will read several articles on the subject chosen (a list will be provided) and they will have to contact an organisation active in this field (visit on the field and/or collection of data via the Internet and other media). They will have to write an individual essay (about ten-page long) meeting three goals: - briefly describing the field of activity and the organisation chosen; - justifying the existence of social economy organisations in this area of activity; - analysing the managerial specificity of the organisation which can be accounted for by its belonging to the social economy sector.
The essays (in their draft form) will have to be handed over to the teachers on the day of the workshop.
The workshop will take place during a two-hour class. The teacher will be accompanied by two resource-persons: a specialised researcher and a field practitioner. The teacher will lead the debate around (1) the raisons d'être of social economy organisations in this area, (2) the managerial specificities of organisations which can be accounted for by their belonging to the social economy sector. Students will be invited to "test" their written work by orally taking part in the debate. The teacher and resource-persons will react to the interventions of the students.

| Course objective :
| The social economy refers to the group constituted by the enterprises of the private sector whose main goal is of a social nature. Most of these enterprises are non-profit organisations (associations), cooperatives, NGOs, mutual societies and foundations. These forms of organisations are still very little studied from the point of view of management sciences.
This course seeks to improve the knowledge of the social economy, to highlight the specificity of management in social economy enterprises and to propose tools adapted to entrepreneurship and management in this sector.
| | | |
| Written notes :
| The students will be informed of the existence of a collection of notes covering some of the chapters of the course. Complementary bibliographical references will be given during the classes. | |
| | | |
| Assessment :
| The students will be evaluated on the basis of (1) their essay in its draft form and their participation in the workshop, on the one hand (5 points) and (2) their essay in its definitive form, on the other hand (15 points). The essays in their definitive form will have to be handed over by the beginning of the exam period (paper and e-version). | |
