Varieties of English in the Commonwealth

Course contents : The course begins with an introduction to the linguistic implications of English colonisation and the history of the former English territories where English is now spoken ; there is also a brief introduction to the linguistic terminology used in this course (e.g. creole, pidgin, etc). The course then covers the specific features (vocabulary, grammar, spelling and pronunciation) of the African, Canadian, Caribbean and Australian varieties of English, starting from authentic documents (both written and oral) and concentrating on their socio-historical context. The last seminars are devoted to case studies presented by the students themselves.
Prerequisites : Good knowledge of English
Organization : The seminar takes place in the second semester, and the last sessions are devoted to presentations by students.
