Interdisciplinary Workshop on North-South relations (seminar)

Course contents : This workshop is based on the active involvement of students, and prepares them for a more accurate understanding of the complex, and quite often erroneous, problematic of realities in the South & North-South relations (through the analysis of experiences, recent audio-visual documents & lively discussions).
In this way, students will have to prepare & present team files on major Third-World development topics, within which the involvement of the North will have to be specified : hunger, refugees, migrations, ecology, urbanization, population, debt, corruption, sustainable dpt, ...
Course objective : - Help students better understand the realities of the South through active involvement of the whole class;
- Make them see those realities are different in the South, and so are the values & the people involved;
- Trigger a constructive think tank on our relations with the South & a possible international career.
Prerequisites : ECO 426 Introduction to Economics
ECO 425 Macroeconomics
Basic knowledge in international economics
Organization : The course is available on the website which enables students to know in advance what topics will be analysed and to have bibliographical references and website lists dealing with these topics. Recommended readings.

Inter- & multidisciplinary approaches of realities :

- presentations & conversations based on real experiences in the South;
- audio-visual means (videos, slides, films, ...) illustrating the realities of the South;
- group discussion;
- seminar team work to prepare the presentation of the files.
-dialogues with guest-speakers with a recent experience in the South.
Assessment : 1st session assessment : continuous assessment of the active participation during group assignments and assessment of the papers.
2nd session assessment : oral examination
Prolonged 2nd session assessment : same as 2nd session
