International Macroeconomics

Course contents : The course starts with a quick refresher on the balance of payment. In a second step the link between money, the interest rate and exchange rates is explored. Our analysis will tackle issues both in the short and the long run, respectively analyzing the interactions between output and exchange rates, and between prices and the exchange rates. Other topics studied are fixed and floating exchange rate systems and their implications for macroeconomic policy. Real-world applications are illustrated, with a particular emphasis on Europe and developing countries.
Course objective : The course examines the importance of macroeconomic analysis for understanding international economic relations. The models used in the different lectures are complemented by real world examples and exercises.The main aim of the course is to provide the student with a good understanding of events in international economics, such as currency devaluations, the role of the central banks in international monetary flows and in exchange rate fluctuations,...
Prerequisites : Introductory macroeconomics
Workshops : Exercise sessions and/or reading packet
Organization : Lectures and recitations.
Written notes : " International Economics, Theory and Policy " (sixth edition, 2003) by Paul Krugman and Maurice Obstfeld, Addison Wesley, (Parts 3 and 4) .
Assessment : Grading will be based on the final written exam at the end of the semester.
