Holder(s) :Jacques Defourny
Course contents : Contemporary capitalist systems will mainly be studied from the point of view of the following themes: on the one hand, the control and behaviour of enterprises and economic integration; on the other hand, the various functions of the state in the economy.
Central and Eastern European economies will be analysed through the heritage of collectivism and the current structural mutations (privatisations, opening of markets etc.).
Course objective : The goal of the seminar is twofold:
- firstly, to offer an introduction to the comprehension of fundamental mechanisms regulating western economies and the Central and Eastern European transition economies. In this sense, this seminar aims to concretise the more theoretical teaching of the political economy course;
- secondly, to teach the students how to conduct a personal investigation, looking for information on current economic events.
Organization : After a few lessons aiming to introduce the main conceptual tools, most of the seminar will be structured in such a way as to alternate lectures by the teacher, presentations by students on the basis of their personal investigations and short debates on the subjects studied.
Written notes : Lecture notes and books of reference:
Defourny, J., Introduction aux systèmes économiques (teacher's notes, available at Point de Vue).
Advised readings:
Albert, M. (1991) Capitalisme contre capitalisme, Points Seuil n° A 141.
Reich, R. (1993) L'économie mondialisée, Paris: Dunod.
Assessment : The evaluation will be based on three elements:

- a written exam on the whole syllabus;
- the work carried out for the personal presentation and the quality of the latter;
- participation in debates.
