Course contents : The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with basic economic mechanisms by analyzing individual behaviour (microeconomics) and general behaviour (macroeconomics).
The course covers topics in the following three areas:
· Microeconomic approach: theory of utility and demand, theory of production and costs, perfect competition, monopoly and price discrimination, oligopoly and monopolistic competition, factor markets.
· Macroeconomic approach: national accounting, consumption and investment, national income equilibrium, budgetary policy, international trade, money supply and demand, IS-LM model and monetary policy, aggregate demand and supply, growth and cycles, unemployment and inflation.
· International economic relations: theory of comparative advantages, exchange systems, depreciation and appreciation of the money, balance of payments and external equilibrium constraint.
Course objective : To provide a basic knowledge in economics by analyzing and explaining individual (microeconomics) and general (macroeconomics) behaviour.
Prerequisites : None.
Workshops : During 20 sessions of 1h30, exercises are given in small groups of students in order to present the chapters of the course in a practical way.
Organization : First and second semester, 90 hours (+ 30 hours of exercises).

Assessment : Written (exercises) and oral exam (theory), first and second session. Students can obtain an exemption for the first part in microeconomics by a test which is organized after the first semester.
