European and International Protection of Human Rights

Course contents : The object of this course shall be the study of the institutional systems that exist in order to ensure that the human rights are effectively respected.

This course will consist of oral presentations, largely based on analyses of the Convention for the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Areas of emphasis to be discussed include: a historical introduction, the rights dictated in the Convention, its case-law, the role that the Convention plays in internal judicial orders, the consequential effects of the judgments and the procedure. The second part of the course will focus on the International Covenant on civil and political rights, and on the issue of the protection of fundamental rights within the European Union.
Course objective : Sensibility at International Protection of Human Rights
Prerequisites : No pre-requisite is required for this course. This course may be taken by students participating in the ERASMUS or the SOCRATES program. A strong knowledge of the French language is essential for a favorable result on the final exam.
Organization : This course will take place during the first semester at the following times:
*Monday from 16:30-18:30 AND *Friday from 16:00- 18:00

Our assistant, Mister Luc Donnay will hold weekly office hours Mondays from 14h-16h in his office (Faculty of Law, building B.31, office R33).

If needed, an alternate meeting time can be arranged outside of his office hours.

Make up classes-Repeat classes: There will be no make up classes for this course. However, question and answer periods can be scheduled based on student needs.
Written notes : There will be no official course notebook. A syllabus will be available from the University based on the notes taken by one of the students. Please note, that these notes should be used with caution and only as a guideline, not in lieu of class notes.
A file of documentation is available for sale at the “point de vue”.
Assessment : There will be an oral exam for this course. Students will be required to analyze a judgment or an admissibility decision that will be given out on the day of the exam. The student shall choose 2 judgments based on a pre-established list that will be given out during the year. Finally, a discussion shall ensue based on the material presented in the habitual manner of an oral exam. In the first session, the student may choose to take the exam in the January session or the June session. Registration for the exam must be made with Mister Luc Donnay.
