Course contents : Partim E. DeGryse : This class focuses primarily on the protection of appellations of origin and geographical indications. It handles the (European and Belgian) legal systems through which these categories of distinctive signs can be protected. Attention is paid to the definition of the different concepts, the administrative procedures to ensure recognition and registration, the case law related to the protection, as well as the difficulties related to infringement and conflicts with other intellectual property rights, such as trademarks. Particular attention is also paid to other signs allowing to distinguish particular quality or specific characteristics of products, such as collective trademarks (certification marks) or quality labels. Partim : P. Rudelsheim Biotechnology has been an intrinsic part of the food industry as early as processes of wine making and bread baking were discovered. However, newer forms of biotechnology, in particular the use of genetically modified organisms, have led to important interrogations on the safety and wholesomeness of the derived foods. Based on the precautionary principle legislation has been put place to address safety aspects of these "Novel Foods". Beyond the strict safety guarantees more regulations were installed to ensure traceability and labelling, key elements to allow meaningful consumer choice. However with the accumulation of laws to prevent harm, new compliance challenges are created for anyone operating in the field
