Course contents : At the end of World War II, the international military Courts of Nuremberg and Tokyo judged the war crimes and the crimes against humanity committed by the nazis and their allies.

By the continuation, the humanitarian international law and the national legislations tried to repress the war crimes, the crimes against humanity and the genocide. The end of the cold war allowed the set up international penal courts.

The course of criminality of war considers initially the cruel and
inhuman acts made by individuals or governments during armed conflicts.

Using many examples, the course studies the war crimes, the crimes against humanity and the genocides, to understand the political and social conditions which make them possible.

In the second time, the course studies the authors of war crime and crimes against humanity from a criminological point of view: the criminal behavior - individual or on order -, the weight of the circumstances. A detailed attention relates to the case of
former Yugoslavia and the functionning of the ICTY.
Course objective : - to understand the components of the war crime, the crime
against humanity and the crime of genocide

- to understand the political, geographical, historical and social environments which make possible the wars and contribute to the crimes

- to understand the social and personal circumstances
which lead certain individuals to commit war crimes or crimes against humanity

- to think about the "normal man" in exceptional situation

- to allow a reflexion on the other forms of organized crime
(terrorism for example)
Prerequisites : Master in criminology.
