| Course contents :
| This course gives a general overview of the physiology of flowering plants. The importance of the topic is introduced by illustrating how its understanding underlies progress in agriculture. The next chapter presents methodological aspects and growth regulators, which are ubiquitously involved in plant physiology. The core of the course is then divided in three main parts : 1) vegetative growth (morphogenesis, photosynthesis, long-distance transports in vaccsular tissues), 2) ecophysiology (stress physiology, photomorphogenesis, movements, organism interactions) and 3) flowering (photoperiodism and the biological clock, vernalisation, flower morphogenesis). | |

| Course objective :
| The objective of the course is to provide basic knowledge in plant physiology. Classical aspects are preferred - because of student's level - but genetical and molecular aspects are also mentioned.
The course starts by illustrating how important is the understanding of plant physiology for making progress in agriculture (e.g. the green revolution), hence for human life. The next chapter explains some 'prerequisite' to the course : methodogical aspects and major growth regulators (or 'hormons' : auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethylene, abscisic acid).
The course is then divided into three main parts :
I. Vegetative growth I.1. Embryogenesis and germination I.2. Cell division, growth and differentiation I.3. Root formation I.4. Shoot morphogenesis I.5. Photosynthesis - light reactions - carbon reactions : C3, C4, CAM metabolisms I.6. Long-distance transports - in the phloem - in the xylem
II. Ecophysiology II.1. Stress physiology - water availability : water stress and flooding - temperature : cold- and heat-stress - light : shading and high light - oxydative stress II.2. Photomorphogenesis and photoreceptors - phytochromes - blue light photoreceptors : cryptochromes and phototropines II.3. Mouvements : nasties and tropisms II.4. Organism interactions
III. Flowering III.1. The biological clock and photoperiodism III.2. Vernalsiation III.3. Flower morphogenesis

| Prerequisites :
| Basic knowledge in plant cell biology | |
| | | |
| Workshops :
| 9 half-days of praticals concern five topics : - the plant cell - growth regulators - mineral nutrition - meristems and growth - photosynthesis
Praticals involve long term experiments, requiring regular and careful treatment and observation of plants, as well as rigourous measurements. Thus some topics overlap on several afternoons.
Special emphasis is also laid on result presentation (tables, graphs); several reports are asked to practice this exercise.

| Organization :
| 90 min lectures, second semestre
practicals : 9 half-days
| | | |
| Written notes :
| power point slides + practical lab-book | |
| | | |
| Assessment :
| oral examination (3 questions)
practical note = 25% final note
