Learning unit contents
In the beginning of the course, basic concepts are presented as well as important issues like energy production, water ressources protection, people and settelments protection against floods. On this basis, and trough case studies, quantitative hydrology is learned using notably reverse classes or presentations and discussions.
At the end of the course, the three groups of students need to master the vocabulary of hydrology, water flow quantification at the watershed scale, they also have to be able to analyse the hydrologic behavior of a watershed using hydrologic records.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course contributes to the development of the following abilities :
- measure the variables and parameters of the environment in view to monitor it
- Identify and understand the flows (energy, water, nutrients, gases) exchanged between the compartments
- quantify the threats to natural ressources
- conceive and use the databases in order to analyse a problem
Furthermore, the courses certifies the following ability :
- analyse the behaviour of a natural system.
More specifically, after completing the course the student is expected to
-define main hydrological terms
-describe technical measurement tools
-discuss about main measurements pros and cons
-calculate the terms of water cycle within a watershed
-analyse observed time series (flow, rain, ...)
-make a preliminary interpretation of hydrological data
-explain different simple modelling systems, their principles and limitations

(the mark of the group is based on the presentations (content, communication, respect of the rules), the work itself (understanding of the problem, litterature anallysis, technical and scientific output). The indivudial marl is adapted depending on the peer evaluation for biggest groups)
