- Definition and comparison of traditional and urban agriculture
- View of technologies used in soilless and protected cultures
- Cultures on soil
- Soilless cultures with substrates
- Hydroponic cultures
- Aquaponic cultures
Partim : Animal production in urban environment (1 ECT):
Specific opportunities and challenges are linked to a harmonious and sustainable integration of livestock farming in an urban environment. The following elements will be given:
- First overview of livestock production globally including the comparison of the conventional and urban contexts
- History of livestock farming with special consideration of the urban context.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The objectives are:
1. To give a global view of the production systems in urban horticulture (essentially in temperate conditions).
2. To demonstrate the complexity of the setting up of those systems, taking social, economic, ecological, technical and legislative constraints into account.
Partim : Plant production in urban environment (1 ECT):
The objectives are:
- To know production techniques used in soilless horticulture (hydroponics, aquaponics, culture with substrate)
- To chose the correct technique depending to the socio economic and geographic context (urban vs countryside)
- To know and regulate the parameters needed in soilless cultures
- To allow the acquisition of sufficient general knowledge needed to discuss with the constructors of urban agricultural production systems.
Partim : Animal production in urban environment (1 ECT):
The objectives are:
- To know the basic principles of animal production
- To know the main useful species and breeds in the context of livestock production in urban areas
- To allow the acquisition of sufficient general knowledge to integrate the animal dimension in discussions on urban farming systems.
