Learning unit contents

The main aim of the course is to illustrate the diversity of several large groups of aquatic organisms. Here, the course focuses primarily on fish fauna.

The course includes a theoretical part and a practical part.

The classes are divided into three main parts. A first section is dedicated to the rules of taxonomy. Then, the diversity of "fish" will be introduced in an evolutionary context and based on a phylogenetic classification. Finally, the anatomy and morphology of teleost fishes will be described within a functional approach.

During a session of lab work, the students will be able, thanks to dissections, to materialize some aspects of fish functional morphology. They will also be able to become familiar with the difficulties of identifying species by using morphological traits.

During the second part of the course, the diversity of molluscs and crustaceans will be approached through group work governed by a flipped classroom approach.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

1. To provide a refresh of Systematics and Taxonomy rules (nomenclature rules, species concept...).

2. To illustrate the diversity of fish, crustaceans and mollusks, composing halieutic resources.

3. To provide basic tools to identify different fish species based on morphological traits.

Theoretical and practical classes and a guided tour of the ichthyological collections at the Aquarium-Museum.

Additional information:

The classes are built on oral presentations with supports (powerpoint presentations). If the courses cannot take place "face to face" due to a health crisis, they will be delivered remotely via Teams.

The presence of students at the courses is mandatory.

A copy of the documents presented during classes (Powerpoints) and a syllabus are provided to the students.
The books used during the practical work session are provided.

Additional information:

First, the group work will be considered as a first test out of the session. The quality of the report as well as the involvement of the student will be evaluated in particular.

Then, students will be assessed during a written exam. This will be composed of open questions and/or multiple choice questions.

Depending on the evolution of a health crisis, the exams will be organized in an auditorium/room at the University or it will be achieved remotely on the eCampus platform.
