Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course includes computer basics (use of a spreadsheet and of a statistical software) and an introduction to biostatistics.
The theoretical part was given in the first semester. Slides with theoretical reminders will be provided first and students are encouraged to ask questions. Thereafter, the sessions are essentially devoted to the application of the theoretical concepts using either software and/or manual calculation.
The main points in the program are:
- Various distributions and how to choose the correct distribution
- Probabilities
- Simulating samples using Excel and R
- Hypothesis testing
- Simulating a contingency table using Excel and R
- Using theoretical and empirical distributions
- Chi-square tests
- Fisher exact tests
- Statistical power calculation
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The main objectives of the course are:
- making the students familiar to the use of computer softwares.
- explaining the statistical reasoning.
- introducing statistical hypothesis testing, and providing numerous examples in biology.
- listing techniques likely to be useful for veterinarians.
- allowing the students to use theoretical concepts on practical examples from the veterinary life.
- showing to the students how to cope with situations not covered in the course.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Biostatistics part I (VETE0432-4)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
20 (+/- 4) hours of practical work (10 to 12 * 2 hours) depending on the students progress.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Blended learning
Additional information:
Face to face, with personal or group work to do at home and/or in session.
Recommended or required readings

Math exercises book sold at the Editions de l'ULg
Slides of the lectures available on the web site
Theoretical reminders (slides sent by email before the session)
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )
Additional information:
As for VETE0432-4, the final grade will include:
- An evaluation taking place at the end of the math practical sessions (if not validated in january)
- An evaluation of the biostatistics skills (if not validated in january)
- An evaluation of the practical sessions know-how (if not validated in january)
Continued evaluation will not take place during the practical sessions.
The final grade is a weighted geometric mean of the math, stat and practicals, with respective weights 0.25, 0.50 and 0.25, rounded to the nearest integer.
For global notes < 10/20, partial exemptions can be awarded for partial notes >= 10/20. For partial notes >= 12/20, the exemptions can be kept for the next year if necessary.
