Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Translation from Spanish to French of texts from untranslated sources.

The focus is on:

- the diversity of sources and working materials (the press but also the audiovisual world, documents from companies and public and private bodies, texts used by international institutions as part of competitions to recruit translators, etc.);

- the issue of the appropriate register for this content, identifying them and adapting them into French;

- more specifically, on the acquisition of knowledge which, in these fields, relates to language variants and/or lexical fields which AI does not currently handle well;

- the formulation of questions in translation studies, based on difficulties encountered in the texts studied, and familiarisation with scientific literature relating to them.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of this teaching unit, students will have made progress in the following areas:

- understanding of the source language based on a diversification of the types of documents translated;

- identification of the style, register and different Spanish language variants presented by these documents;

- analysis and resolution of the translation difficulties related to these variants;

- identification, localisation and use of scientific resources likely to be able to help with this approach.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Very good knowledge of the Spanish language, and perfect command of French.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching method is based on two equally important working fields:

- on the one hand, preparation of a translation by each student at home, then shared and discussed in class;

- on the other, translation workshops around a document which has not been prepared in advance. The class will be divided into groups of three or four students working together on these documents. The aim of this method is to develop all issues or differences emerging from these discussions and to support the work of each student as they progress

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face

Recommended or required readings

In addition to course notes and reference works, a bibliography covering scientific articles will be developed depending on the specific difficulties presented by the source texts.
