Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course comprises a theoretical and a practical part.
The theoretical part is subdivided into two sections: physics and chemistry.
Physics includes the following two chapters: a/ Introduction to thermodynamics  (first and second principle) and b) Additions regarding electricity (theory of alternative currents)
Chemistry includes notions of chemical kinetics and of chemical balances.
For Physics, the practical part largely deals with automation and measuring techniques.
For Chemistry, the practical part aims at an experimental understanding of the theoretical notions.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course revises part of General Physics and General Chemistry.
It consolidates the knowledge acquired in the Physics and Chemistry courses taught in Block 1 and 2.
It especially aims at preparing students for the specialism in "Sciences and Technologies' through presenting useful and often necessary notions to an understanding of modern technologies.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Course on General Physics and General Chemistry (Block 1 and 2 Business Engineering).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

- Face-to-face course:
10h for chemistry and 10h for physics
- Practical classes  (25h) are organised with the support of the lecturer assistant.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Additional information:

Theoretical part: The course relies on excellent reference works (see basic bibliography) adapted to basic science for Business Engineers and on multimedia support.  Other supports comprise a powerpoint application including the curriculum as a whole and a course reader including the copies of all slides.  In addition to the powerpoint application, there is a substantial portion of educational animations substituting for laboratory experimentation.  As far as possible, the students will be offered the chance of a real experiment.  Numerous exercices and concept applications will be proposed throughout the course.

Practical part: the students will be assigned definite projects allowing for individual initiatives. They will be expected to take up an objective challenge rather than carry out an operational task.

Recommended or required readings

- Harris BENSON, "Electricité et électromagnétisme", (de Boeck-Université). - Harris BENSON, "Thermodynamics", (de Boeck-Université).

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire, open-ended questions )

Written work / report

Continuous assessment

Additional information:

1st session assessment: a written examination (amounting to 50% of the total score) consisting in questions covering the whole theoretical course and bearing on both the theoretical parts and the underlying applications.
As a rule, the examination consists in both a MCQ and open questions (exercices and theory).
The remaining 50% are calculated on the basis of continuous assessment relating to the practical part.

2nd session assessment:
similar to the 1st session as far as the theoretical part is concerned plus a practical work assignment.
