Learning unit contents

This course offers an introduction to three industrial sectors: chemicals, agri-food and pharmaceuticals. Through a description of the main sectors and the equipment used in production, it aims to provide students with the knowledge necessary to communicate the specialists in the sector in their future professional practice.
The course is structured in 4 parts, based on the interventions of 4 co-teachers.
Part 1 - Industrial chemistry (Prof. Angélique Léonard/FSA)
1. Structure of the chemical industry 2. Raw materials 3. Energy 4. The major environmental issues 5. Oil refining and petrochemistry 6. The production processes of main inorganic chemicals
Part 2 - Agri-food industry (Prof. Sabine Danthine/ Gembloux Agro bio Tech)
1. General introduction 2. Production and processing of fats (plants and animals) 3. Sugar sector 4. Agro (bio) fuels
Part 3 - Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology (Prof. Brigitte Evrard/Medicine)
1. Definition, genesis, production and specificities of the drug 2. Pharmacoeconomics 3. Marketing and the pharmaceutical regulatory environment 4. Intellectual property in the world of pharmaceutical business
Part 4 - Industrial equipments (Prof. Dominique Toye/FSA)
1. Description and classification of the main equipments (unit operations) 2. Description and comparison of the different operating modes 3. Systemic methodology for calculating (material) balances 4. Illustration by numerical examples

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will be able:
- to know the major characteristics of the Belgian and European chemical industry
- to discuss the resources in raw materials and in energy used by the chemical sector
- to discuss major environmental issues related to the production industries
- to explain how major products from the chemical, agri-food and pharmaceutical sectors are industrially obtained through traditional processes based on petroleum resources or innovative processes based on biomass or biotechnology
- to know the main devices used in the industry and their function in the process;
- to identify their operating mode;
- to establish the mathematical correlation between the incoming and outgoing material flows of an apparatus or process by solving the corresponding material balances;

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The course relies on basic knowledge in chemistry, as taught in the course of the bachelor in civil engineering or management engineering.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • 'Ex-cathedra' lectures + remote courses (+podcasts in technically possible)
  • Interventions by industry specialists
  • Mandatory factory visit (attendance, if no visit, no examination)
  • Group work (content will be presented in class)

Additional information:

Written exam (January and September). It contains 5 opened questions on the contents of the theoretical course and the resolution of an exercise of similar difficulty to those solved in class (authorized calculator).

Submission of the work (written report and presentation) by midnight on 22 December is compulsory for access to the written examination.

Weighting between the parties:

Part 1: 30%.

Part 2: 15%.

Part 3: 15%.

Part 4: 15%.

Work: 25% 

If attendance is not permitted, it will be a distance examination based on open-ended questions.

For the second session, the work group is not taken in consideration anymore.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

The course is organised on Tuesday morning during the first quadrimester.

The schedule (that can be modified) will be presented during the first lecture.
