Learning unit contents

An internship is an individual project carried out in collaboration with a company, in Belgium or in a foreign country. It is generally considered to represent the equivalent of 3 weeks of full-time work in a company (15 working days). The subject proposed by the student must be approved by a promoter, who must be a permanent member of the academic or scientific staff.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this internship is to provide a first experience of the corporate world. Students will have to prove that they are capable of carrying out a substantial piece of work using the knowledge and know-how acquired throughout their studies. The work includes the preliminary definition of a set of specifications drawn up by the student and the company, a personal project and an assessment.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The student must submit an internship proposal indicating the selected company, the contact details of a reference within the company and a set of specifications compatible with the duration of the internship. This proposal must be validated by a promoter. The promoter may then impose extra conditions of access (for example, certain pre-requisites or corequisites). The student chooses a subject as early as possible, ideally at the end of the previous academic year, so as to be as well organised as possible. A placement agreement is drawn up between the company and the institution. The student must keep his/her promoter informed of the progress of the work at appropriate intervals.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Blended learning

Exam(s) in session

- In-person

oral exam

Written work / report

Other : oral defense

Additional information:

Assessment is based on the student's report. There are no formal constraints on the length of the report, but typically around twenty pages are expected (excluding any computer code produced). The student will describe the context, the specifications, the work carried out, any choices made, his/her analysis and any appendices. The student's defence of the project is oral and public. It comprises an oral presentation (10 minutes) and a question and answer session (10 minutes). It is followed by a deliberation. The final mark takes into account the scope and quality of the work carried out, the quality of the written report and oral presentation, and the relevance of the answers to the questions. The jury is made up of the promoter, the company tutor and the coordinator of all the internships.

The deadline for submitting reports is identical to that for master thesis. The timetable for presentations will also be the same as that for master thesis defences.
