Learning unit contents

The course intends to analyze sensitive trade control regimes rules and policies. It focuses on non-economic (political) exceptions to free trade rules established by the World Trade Organization.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course intends to analyze international and European sensitive trade control systems and support the student to understand legally and politically binding instruments ruling (political) free trade exceptions.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Assistance and active participation are compulsory for all lectures.

The course is based on active learning sessions moderated by the teacher where the students will critically discuss the topics of the session.
Topics will be identified and slides will be available the week before the lecture to allow students to examine them in advance for the group discussion. Lectures will only be dedicated to elements not understood by students.

The course is organised in:

  • a series of topics setting the essential elements of sensitive trade control regimes (dual-use items, weapons, diamonds, cultural goods)
  • Cases studies
  • Possible contributions and presentations made by regulators and industries
