"Welcome to the Ministry of International Cooperation of the Republic of Hopeland. You are the new expert in charge of reinforcing the knowledge of the Minister on various subjects related to development and humanitarian aid. In order to fulfill your mission, you will have to pass various tests. If you fail, you will be locked up in the Ministry forever".
This course deals with various current issues in development cooperation and humanitarian aid in the form of a virtual escape game.
- Challenges and strengths of humanitarian aid. Historical roots and evolution of the sector from the Napoleonic Wars to the present day, modes of intervention and financing, tools, mechanisms and mechanisms of action, debates and contemporary issues;
- The new actors and strategies of international aid. The place and actors of South-South Cooperation; the Sustainable Development Goals and climate justice; new trends in development financing; international cooperation in times of pandemics.
-Aid discourse: we analyze the "buzzwords" of international cooperation (participation, ownership, empowerment, etc.), their role in cooperation and their relevance.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students will be able to
- Identify the main actors and describe the contemporary challenges of international aid, both in the field of humanitarian aid and development aid;
- Understand the new dynamics underway in these sectors of international aid (issues, debates and dimensions);
- Sorting and manipulating information and data (both scientific and grey literature) with rigor on the past or contemporary dynamics of international aid;
- Write briefing notes on various topics related to international aid;
- Adopt a critical expert position on the evolution of development aid and humanitarian aid.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
This course continues and deepens the courses "Introduction to International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid" (Bachelor) and "Sociology of International Cooperation" (Master).
A basic knowledge of the actors and issues of international cooperation is essential.
Written knowledge of Englis required.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is organized in the form of a role-playing game, both online and in class (see Mode of delivery section).
The skills are transmitted in the form of :
- video clips and various readings ;
- research and analysis of data and information undertaken by students;
- various games

The course is organized in the form of a role play using a video platform. The game activities are mainly organized in class under the supervision of a supervisor. Between two sessions of the course, the game can be continued on the remote platform.

Additional information:
In accordance with the principles of an escape game, the students will have to pass various tests to advance in the game and get out of the space where they are locked up.
As the game is organized in group, the final score will be refined by the student's personal score.
